Just how well do you know your community? Do you give everyone a chance to share how they feel about their voice? Here’s a simple solution to KNOW how your community feels. You might be surprised.

This community survey is the foundation of theWe All Have a Voice! program. Each school should start with this survey to see where their community is before taking action.

At the very beginning of the We All Have a Voice! program in 2014, Melinda Forward found that 44% of students at her school did not feel like they had a voice.  Those results lead to the building of a DREAM Wall so everyone could have a space to share their thoughts, hopes and dreams.

4 Super Simple Steps for YOU to UNDERSTAND your community

1) Distribute small index cards to students. The goal is to survey 1/2 of the school population. Teachers, staff, and even parents can be included in the survey.

2) On one side of each card, have each student write:  What does it mean to have a voice?

On the other side of the card have each student write: Do you feel like you have one?  Why or why not?

3) Give students a week to complete their surveys.

4) Take all of the cards and compile data.

  • Total number of people surveyed: ___ = ____% of school population
  • How many people said “Yes” ?
  • How many people said “Maybe”?
  • How many people said “No”?
  • What were the most frequent answers?
  • What do you find in common?
  • Go through cards and make a list of quotes that are powerful.
  • Type them up in a list that you can share at a community event.
